Maintenance & Troubleshooting of a PON Network

 Troubleshooting a faulty passive optical point-to-multipoint network (PON) can be more complex than a point-to-point network. This application note looks at the use of non-intrusive or active fiber testing for troubleshooting PON networks.
 Point-to-Point FTTx Network
When a failure occurs on a point-to-point FTTx network, the network completely shuts down. It is then easy to disconnect the fiber without further affecting the customer issue.
To troubleshoot and fix FTTx network problems, an optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) test can be performed with any test wavelength, such as 1310 or 1550 nm as the transmission signals are shut down.

 Point-to-Multipoint FTTH Network (PON) Topology
Troubleshooting a point-to-multipoint fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network (also defined as a PON net-work) differs significantly.
The International Telecommunications Union (ITU-T) and Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) have created several standards for optical access systems based on PON architecture (G.982, G.983 or G.984 for ITU and 802.3ah or 802.3av for IEEE). As Figure 2 shows, a PON network consists of one optical line terminal (OLT) connected via a splitter to multiple optical network terminals (ONTs) (one for each subscriber, up to 64 subscribers). Sometimes, a second splitter can be connected in cascade to the first splitter (as Figure 3 shows) to dispatch services to buildings or residential areas.

Using the network monitoring system at the Network Operation Center (NOC), operators can easily determine which subscribers are affected. They can also identify possible fault elements such as how many customers are affected and whether the PON is cascaded.
The cases below describe each possible scenario:
PON Case 1: Simple PON - Only One Customer is Affected
When only one subscriber cannot receive service, three potential faults are probable, see Figure 4:
‒ Fault in the distribution fiber between the customer and the closest splitter
‒ Fault in the ONT equipment
‒ Fault in the customer’s home wiring

PON Case 2: Cascaded PON and all Affected Customers are Connected to the Same Splitter
When all customers connected to the same splitter cannot receive service, but others connected to the same OLT can, the cause may be because of one of the following (see Figure 5):
‒ Fault at the last splitter
‒ Fault in the fiber link between the cascaded splitters

PON Case 3: All Customers are Affected (at the OLT level)
Whether or not the PON is cascaded, all customers dependant on the same OLT may be affected. If all cus-tomers are affected, the cause may be from of the following:
‒ Fault in the splitter closest to the OLT
‒ Fault in the feeder fiber/cable of the fiber network
‒ Fault in the OLT equipment

Passive Optical Network Introduction

Edited by FiberCasa.com
Passive Optical Network (PON) technology provided by Fibercasa is a optical access technology  of one point to multipoint ,which consists of the office side of OLT (optical line terminal), the user-side optical network unit (ONU) and ODN (Optical Distribution Network) . Generally Fibercasa uses TDM broadcast mode for downlink and TDMA(Time Division Multiple Access) mode for uplink;besides it also can compose tree type , star, bus topology etc. (typical structure of a tree structure) flexibly . The so-called "passive" indicates that the ODN does not contain any active electronic devices and electronic power supply, and consists of passive components like the optical splitter, so the costs of management and maintenance are lower.

Fibercasa applies PON technology to the network, so that the technology can provide users with 30 ~ 100Mbit / s of bandwidth, and the access distance up to 10 ~ 20km. Its main strengths are:
(1)PON technology can solve issues about FTTH and FTTO, which provides necessary conditions for evolution of Communications networks to all-optical network ;
(2)PON technology can provide "full-service" access,meeting bandwidth needs for the video entertainment and home office fully;
(3)PON technology adopts cascadable passive optical splitter,which not only saves trunk cables, but also simplifies the network structure greatly and improves network robustness;
(4)FTTH solutions with PON technology not only have high reliability of optical fiber, but also is very suitable for the development broadcast / multicast video / audio business .

As the coaxial cable transmission systems, optical network system provided by Fibercasa also needs the optical signal to be coupled, branched and distributed, which requires optical splitter. Optical splitter called splitter, which is one of the most important passive components in a fiber link, and fiber tandem devices having a plurality of inputs and a plurality of output terminals. Usually Fibercasa rules that M × N refers to splitter with M inputs and N outputs.

Optical splitter can be divided to fused biconical taper and planar waveguide according to principles in Fibercasa. Fused biconical taper is shaped through two or more fibers side splicing; planar waveguide is a micro-optics-based products, forming the optical waveguide on the dielectric or a semiconductor substrate using lithography technology to achieve the branch distribution function. The spectral theories of two forms are similar. They are mutual coupling by altering the evanescent field (coupling length) between the fibers and achieve the branches of various sizes by changing the radius of the fiber ,conversely multiplexed optical signals may be combined into one signal called a synthesizer. Fused fiber couplers due to the good points of simple production method, cheap, easy to connect with external fiber becoming an entirety, as well as resisting to mechanical vibration and temperature changes etc.,has become mainstream manufacturing technology so far.

Fused biconical taper method of Fibercasa is two (or more) optical fiber cables removed the coating layer converged in a certain waystretched to both sides while heated and melted at high temperatures, forming double cone forms of special waveguide structure in the heating zone finally, by controlling the angle of twist and stretch fiber length, you can get different spectral ratio. Finally, make the tapered region curing adhesive curing on a quartz substrate into the stainless steel copper tube, which is the optical splitter. This production process is different from quartz substrate and stainless steel due to the thermal expansion coefficient of curing adhesive, the degree of expansion and contraction are inconsistent when temperature changes, which this situation are easy to lead to the damage of the optical splitter, especially the optical splitter in the wild situation, which is the main reason for the damage of the optical splitter.
